Wi-Skies welcomes Katie Aiken to the team, located in St. Louis, MO
Mrs. Aiken boasts seven years of lighting design experience including IDOT roadways, Class 1, Div. 1 natural gas compressor stations; and several LEED certified buildings. Her strengths are in customer relations and design standards. She brings ten years of diverse engineering experience ranging from reliability engineering in a taconite plant to 345kV distribution substations.
Electrical Engineer for Laramore, Douglass and Popham, INC.
Ms. Aiken has been responsible for the design, development and management of projects to build electrical substations with voltages from 34.5kV and above. Areas of substation design experience include development of one-line, three-line, current and potential diagrams, interconnection wiring drawings; Physical layout, foundation, underground conduit and grounding drawings. Bill of Material development. She was also responsible for performing lightning analysis using Rolling Sphere Method and Fixed Angle Method utilizing WinIGS software, as well as interior and exterior lighting studies using Visual computer software. Ms. Aiken prepared specifications for overall contractor construction bidding as well as specifications for purchase of materials and equipment. She is familiar with individual customer design standards and producing exceptional drawing packages within those standards.
Utility Substation Yard Lighting
Katie was the lead Lighting Design Engineer for Distribution Substation yards for electric utilities nationwide including: PGE (CA), AEP(TX), DTE (MI), PSEG (NJ), and AVANGRID (NY). These yards generally were enclosed by fencing and had the stipulation of not disturbing the neighboring properties with light pollution. Lighting was to be kept between 2-5fc to discourage tripping hazards. Lighting was also designed to be kept even across the substation by mounting on lightning masts located throughout the station.

PLS Pumping Station – Ms. Aiken was the lead Lighting Design Engineer for an elevated walkway crossing between two PLS ponds at the Lone Star Copper extraction plant. Exterior lighting was needed to illuminate the walkway to 10-15fc and provide lighting at the PLS pumps. The Customer requested specific wet location fixtures mounted on swivel poles and the fixtures were to be operated by photocell and lighting contactor with the option of an additional exterior light switch. This was to be powered from a panel in a nearby Electrical Room.

Booster Pumping Stations – Katie was the lead Lighting Design Engineer for Non Storm Water, Well, and Dry Pond Booster Pump Stations. Exterior lighting was needed to illuminate the booster pumps to 5fc. The Customer requested specific wet location fixtures mounted on wood poles and the fixtures were to be operated by photocell and lighting contactor with the option of an additional exterior light switch. Whereas this lighting was to be powered from a remote panel in an Electrical Room 200+yds away, voltage drop calculations were completed as well.

SX Wash Settler – Ms. Aiken was the lead Lighting Design Engineer for the SX Wash Stage Settler exterior plant lighting. This included lighting elevated walkways around 60’ x 60’ x 20’ wash settlers as well as multilevel industrial stairwells and below grade areas around the wash settlers. These areas were to be lit to 2-5 fc. It also included lighting a below grade walkway area for Loaded Organic Storage Tanks 50’ in diameter. This enclosed area was to be illuminated to 5-10fc. A new drive up area to the new electrical room was to be lit for security. The Customer requested specific wet location fixtures mounted on a combination of swivel poles and wood poles and the fixtures were to be operated by photocell and lighting contactor. This was to be powered from a panel in a nearby Electrical Room.

Truck Shop Expansion – Katie was the lead Lighting Design Engineer for the new truck shop expansion lighting. This included providing adequate lighting (50fc) for maintenance completed on the trucks while inside the truck shop. An exterior drive was also lit to allow maintenance to completed outside the shop (10fc). The Customer requested specific wet location fixtures pendant mounted inside the truck shop and wood pole mounted outside the shop. The interior fixtures were to be operated via indoor lighting contactor and switch and the exterior fixtures were to be operated by photocell and lighting contactor and an additional exterior light switch. This was to be powered from a panel in a nearby Electrical Room.
